First comes shapes and then comes writing.

Does your child struggle with making letters or numbers look the way they’re supposed to? Or maybe it’s time to learn to write.

First comes shapes and then comes writing letters and numbers. Shapes are the beginning strokes needed to master letter and number writing. Kids first learn by tracing the shapes and then are able copy them from a picture. Draw the Shape Practice Pages refines this skill. An instruction guide is included with several ideas on how to change up the activity for continued use.

Ages: 4 and up

Pages vary in number based on practice box size.

This Draw the Shape Pre-writing Practice Pages comes in 3 sizes.

Practice in boxes sized 1.5” is for those just learning to write (preschool/kindergarten). Younger kids write bigger. Their average letter size is 1.5”

Practice in boxes sized  1” is for those who are learning to write sentence (1st-2nd grade). Kids who know their letters and are now putting them together to make words average letter size is 1”.

The .5” sized practice boxes are for writers wanting to gain stroke precision.  Older kids who write sentences but need precision with strokes (helps with writing quickly and legibly) write about .5” or smaller.

This activity will help your child develop…

  • Eye-hand coordination: is used to recognize the design and knowing where to place the pencil/crayon to start to trace/copy the shape and knowing when and where to stop
  • Fine Motor skills: are needed to grip the pencil/crayon efficiently and control the stroke to stay in the box
  • Pre-writing skill development: if children can make the shapes correctly without tracing them, they’re on their way to making letters using correct formation. Correct formation is the foundation for writing speed which is needed at higher grades.

Draw the Shapes Practice Pages is a quick and easy printable that can be used several different ways to build those pre-writing or precision writing skills. The Draw the Shape activity works on developing eye hand coordination, fine motor skills, and building the pre-writing skills foundation.
